Skyros - the island
Skyros is an island whose history stretches far into the mythological period, where the first traces and clues can be found.
Theseus, Lykomidis, Axill and Neoptolemos are mythological figures who are inextricably linked to the history of the island.
The Neolithic period, the classical period, the Roman and subsequently the Ottoman rule up to the pirate invasions, all of this shaped the island, a habitat with archaic roots, which still live today in the traditional customs and traditions.
In the two museums on the island, the Folklore and Archaeological Museum, you can find many documents and monuments of this important past.
Skyros is the largest island in the island complex of the northern Sporades and is characterized by a unique landscape feature. The northern part of the island is rich in dense pine forests and agricultural areas, in the south there is a shepherd landscape with dense shrub vegetation, which in addition to goats and sheep also offers the unique Skyrian pony a refuge of rare beauty.
The most picturesque point on the island is without a doubt the Chora, the main town on the island, with its houses, which are arranged like an amphitheater and nestle against a 179m high rock. At the top of the rock is the old castle, from where there is a unique view of the vast blue Aegean Sea. The construction of the castle is remarkable, as it is only accessible from one side, all other 3 sides drop steeply to the sea and thus offer a natural fortification against enemy attacks.
Next to the castle is the monastery of St. George, who is the patron saint of the island and from where there is a unique view for visitors.
Of all the beaches on the island, some offer their own aesthetic beauties. On the north side it is the beach of Atsitsa, Agalipa, which can only be reached by boat, Agios Petros, Gyrismata and Pefkos. The south side has the long beach of Kalamitsa and Kolymbada.
The crystal clear water, the clean and translucent seabed in connection with the beauty of the landscape seduce the visitor to feel one with the splendor of the creation that spreads before him.
